Episode 8: Amanda Robert

In this episode of Indigenous Voices in Resource Development, host John Desjarlais speaks with Amanda Robert, Senior Advisor of Indigenous and Community Relations at Suncor Energy.

Amanda shares her personal journey as a proud Métis woman from Manitoba who grew up in Alberta and built a unique career path, from leaving school early and working in trades as a heavy-duty mechanic to becoming a leader in Indigenous involvement within Canada’s resource sector.

The conversation explores the importance of Indigenous representation in industry, mentorship for Indigenous youth, and how lived experience can be just as valuable as formal education. Amanda also discusses the challenges Indigenous workers face in resource industries and why creating inclusive workplaces, Indigenous employee networks, and culturally supportive environments are critical for recruitment and retention.

Amanda and John highlight how Indigenous knowledge and leadership are shaping the future of responsible resource development, in consultation,  economic partnerships and Indigenous-led reclamation initiatives. They emphasize that meaningful reconciliation requires action, accountability, and ensuring Indigenous voices are included in policy, business decisions, and industry leadership.
